About myPlates & road safety

myPlates is the body authorised by the NSW Government to issue a range of special number plates – Standard, Personalised and Personalised Plus content for Cars, Light Trucks, Heavy Vehicles, Trailers & Motorcycles.

Protecting Your Plates

The fees you pay give you the right to display your plates, but the plates themselves belong to the RTA. That means if you ever sell your vehicle but you want to keep your plates, we can look after them if you won’t be using them for a while. You can pay the storage fee and any annual content fees for up to 5 years in advance.

Transferring Your Plates

If you sell your vehicle but want to keep your plates, you can swap them over to your new vehicle through an RTA Motor Registry.

You can exchange standard or personalised content plates between immediate family members, or between companies and employees or between associated companies. You’ll need to give us proof of your relationship and might have to pay some fees for the transfer or exchange.

Personalised Plus or numeral-only plates can be sold or traded. They can sometimes turn out to be a really good investment as they can rise in value over time.

Good Taste, Bad Taste?

There are lots of options for you to give your vehicle an individual mark. Of course, everyone can see them, so we may need to refuse an order if we think it’s offensive or inappropriate. If we issue plates but they’re later thought to be offensive they can be withdrawn, so please choose carefully.
